EPITHALON (EPITALON, AEDG) is a synthetic tetrapeptide developed by Vladimir Khavinson and colleagues at the St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology, based on the amino-acid composition of epithalamin, a polypeptide extract of the pineal gland.
Research Background
Laboratory studies have reported induction of telomerase activity and telomere elongation in cultured human somatic cells (Khavinson et al., 2003), as well as effects on melatonin secretion and circadian rhythm parameters in animal models. Its small size and simple sequence make it a model compound for research into short regulatory peptides and chromatin interaction.
