Product Overview
Scientific profile
MOTS-C (mitochondrial open reading frame of the 12S rRNA type-c) is a 16-amino-acid peptide encoded by a short open reading frame within the mitochondrial genome. It was identified by Lee et al. (Cell Metabolism, 2015) as a member of the mitochondrial-derived peptide (MDP) family.
Research Background
In cellular and rodent studies MOTS-C has been shown to act on the folate–methionine cycle, leading to accumulation of the AMP analogue AICAR and activation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). Under metabolic stress the peptide can translocate to the nucleus and regulate antioxidant-response genes, establishing it as a model for mitochondria-to-nucleus retrograde signalling.
Areas of Investigation
- AMPK signalling and skeletal-muscle glucose handling in preclinical models
- Mitochondrial–nuclear communication and stress-response gene regulation
- Exercise physiology and metabolic adaptation research
- Ageing-associated changes in mitochondrial-derived peptides
